This is one of my favorite lines from The Book of Water by Steven Forrest:
Healing begins with feeling.
Simple enough, and easy to agree with in theory, yet much different in practice.
Grief that is hard to name but sits like a rock in the pit of your stomach, anger trapped in your throat for fear of how it might come out, or the longing to hit the return-to-sender button on words that have caused pain. All of this and more coexist within the same waters of healing, life-giving love. But when our relationship to love itself is troubled, so are those waters.
Cancer season officially begins on Father’s Day, June 21, at 4:24 a.m. Eastern Time, as the Sun enters the sign of Cancer and we arrive at the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.
By early evening, the Moon reaches its First Quarter phase in Libra, bringing relationships into the story and fine-tuning the emotional tone for the season ahead.
Cancer is associated with home, family, belonging, care, and nurturing. Yet beneath all of these themes lives a more fundamental question:
How do you feel about that?
My habitual (Cancer South Node) response after someone tells me a story is often the same:
“And how do you feel about that?”
When my daughter and her friends were young, I would often ask them that question. They sometimes imitated me in a playful way. As she has grown older, though, she continues to express her appreciation for the invitation to move beyond the story and what happened (or didn’t) and into what is happening inside of her.
What is your body telling you?
What is your heart telling you?
Many of us learned early in life that certain feelings were welcome while others were not. We learned to explain them away, minimize them, justify them, or move past them as quickly as possible.
Yet feelings do not disappear simply because they are ignored.
They wait for us.
Cancer season reminds us that our feelings are not obstacles to overcome. They are part of how we find our way.
Earlier this month, Venus and Jupiter came together in Cancer, opening what I have come to think of as a cycle of Great Mother Blessings.
There’s a catch though. You have to ask for them…and then engage with what arises. When opportunities to receive support, nourishment, care, and belonging continue to present themselves, what do you do?
This can look like:
• Asking for help where we usually (perhaps grudgingly) do it ourselves.
• Offering care when we can, while also allowing ourselves to receive it, especially the care we so freely give to others.
• Softening where guardedness comes between us and love, while strengthening boundaries in the places where we may have lost our healthy sense of self.
• Continuing to turn toward love, even when fear would have us turn away.
Oh, the things we do for love
And the things we avoid for fear of losing it
